My family: The ones who share all my crazy genes and love me anyway!

31 Jul

Hi yall!

I want to start this post by letting all my readers and followers know that I am MOVING! Where you ask? To TheAccidentalMrs.com. If you love (or even just like) this blog, please follow me over there! And my apologies, but you’ll have to re-follow my blog on the new site. I’ll continue to update here until I’ve completely made the switch. All social channels will stay the same!

So back to today’s posts… Today, I want to share pictures, stories and dirty little secrets about some of my favorite people in the world- my absolutely, positively, crazy, awesome, perfect family! It’s so cliche, but I totally wouldn’t be here without them (thanks Mom and Dad!)

My story starts about here… well, I guess a few years earlier.

I was born in Houston and grew up in a very tight knit family who spent every holiday, and lots of just-because days together. And when I say with my family, I’m talking cousins, second cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents… everyone!

Mom’s side of the family

Dad’s side of the family

Let’s get to know the fam real quick:

There’s Mom and Dad (Anne and George are their grown-up names). They are pretty cute-sicles.

Then there’s my “little” brother Matt, who absolutely towers over me! He is an aspiring actor and model. I know he’ll make it, so before he does, I was smart enough to lock down a spot as his date for at least one red carpet event.

Then there’s the surprise. Meet Madelyn! She’s 7 going on 25, and she knows it. Her favorite things to do are text, Facebook and hang out with friends. I know. She’s 7.

Stop it. I die. She was 4 here.

Here’s a more recent picture of the oh-so-chic little lady in my life. She’s with my nephew Lino Antonio in this picture. You’ll meet him soon in a future post.

Now that you know them, let’s get back to the story. When I went away to college in Alabama, it was hard being 10 hours away from my family. I made it home enough, two or three times a semester, but it was hard, I’m not going to lie. Especially since Maddie, my 7-year-old “Accident”al sister (… see what I did there??) was only a year and a half old when I left. Of course it was a tough choice to go, and I could have stayed in Texas, but I couldn’t have looked my parents in the eyes and said, “Listen, I know I’m being offered this great full-ride-and-then-some scholarship, but I’d rather stay in Texas and make you guys pay for it… or better yet be buried in student loans forever!” No way, Jose. That just wasn’t an option. It was too good of an offer- I had to go.

Four years seemed to fly by, and when it was time to make my choice about where to go and what to do after college, I seemed to pick the not-the-best choice again by taking the first job I was offered, which was in Atlanta. By this point, my parents had moved to Arizona, and I just didn’t see myself being able to pursue the same big-agency PR career that I could in Atlanta. So again, I made the unpopular choice to move even further- now we are on complete opposite sides of the country.

That’s me with my first pet in my first apartment. I was a real grown up! 😉

Luckily for me- this is when my story really started. I met Mr. R at that “first job I was offered” and it was happily ever after. And now, I have been SO incredibly blessed to join another family that is just as crazy, amazing and loving as my own. But that’s a whole different story… Coming soon 🙂

One of our first dates (and our very first picture together): A John Mayer concert!

It’s still SO hard being away from my family, but we really make our trips and visits count, and now they are even starting to think about moving here to Atlanta. I would clearly die from happiness.

All in all- this whole post is to say how much I love and adore my family. I don’t think I have one conversation that they aren’t brought up in. Everyone that meets my family falls in love with them, just like I do over and over again, every single time I get to talk to them.

Monograms and Mimosas

28 Jul

Hey yall!

So, I am going to a Monograms and Mimosas bridal shower today (which I think is the cutest idea I have ever heard!) While the hostess was nice enough to include a list of places that monogram with the invitation, I have been worrying about what to get the bride-to-be for weeks! So of course, where do I turn but Pinterest?

In case anyone else is faced with a monogram-gift-dilemma, fear not! I have put together a cheat sheet of my new favorite items! Check them out and let me know what you think!

monogram pitcher like this one is perfect for the couple that loves to entertain. This one will run you $46, but I’m still trying to figure out a way to DIY one.

Love this classy, simply and chic monogram sign via Little Inspiration.

I bet most bridesmaids would LOVE to receive these monogram robes via Memento as a gift from their bride! So cute, and they’ll definitely last a while.

You can get a more modern monogram look with this necklace from Poppy’s Closet.

Let’s give the guys a little love, too. This beer cooler via Party Resources would be a great, personalized gift for him!

You can DIY your monogram like this great bag I found on Pinterest. Make sure you have plenty of time, and maybe even extras if it’s your first time!

And finally, here’s what I ended up with. Hope the lovely bride-to-be will like it!

Recipe: Fresh Strawberry Pie

25 Jul

Hi everyone!

Have to share this delicious and super easy recipe with you all (are you picking up on a theme here?) Mr. R originally found this recipe for fresh strawberry pie here in The Test Kitchen, and it was a hit when we debuted it at a family 4th of July party. Needless to say, this is going to be our go-to dish to bring anywhere!

Last weekend we went to a BBQ and brought two pies. Everyone loved them!

-2.5 lbs. fresh, whole strawberries

– 3/4 c sugar

– 2 tbs. cornstarch

– 1.5 tsp. pectin

– pinch slat

– pie sheet

– whipped cream

First, bake your crust and let cool. We used frozen, pre-made crusts, but if you’re feeling adventurous, here is a recipe for a pie crust from Simply Recipes.

Puree 6 large strawberries until smooth

In a bowl, mix sugar, cornstarch, pectin and salt. Mix it in with the strawberry puree.

Bring mixture to a boil and let boil for 2 minutes, stirring the whole time. After it cooks, transfer the gel-like mix to a bowl, add 1 tsp. lemon juice. Cool filling.

Add whole strawberries to puree and mix

Pile filling into pie crust

Let cool in fridge 2 hours. Then add whipped cream and enjoy. This recipe makes one pie… but you may need two 😉

Inspiration Board: Turquoise Love

24 Jul

Hi yall!

So last week I wrote about my favorite color, coral. Read that one here. This week, I put together another inspiration board, with all things turquoise. I love this color, too, and they happen to look fab together!

First- let’s talk about how awesome this Tiffany Blue Laundry Room via Cameras and Chaos is. I would do laundry EVERY day if it was in a room like this!

This teal dress with silver accessories via Polyvore is perfect for a rehearsal dinner, holiday party or wedding. So glamorous!

For the home: Loving this teal and burlap wall hanging, found on Etsy. Rustic, simple, lovely. You’ll see a little later how well this would fit in my house!

Eventually, I must have a high-low dress like this turquoise number- in love! via Pinterest.

Teal becomes the accent color in this dark outfit with a pop of color, via Polyvore.

And finally- a personal touch. Some turquoise touches in our own home!

Nicki Minaj Concert: Pictures!

23 Jul

Hey yall!

So I told you all yesterday that Mr. R had given me Nicki Minja concert tickets for my birthday in May (see photo below) and last night was finally the show!

It was such an amazing, fun show and I am SO happy we got to go (although now I can’t stop singing Starships). She had tons of “special guests”, including Bobby Valentine, Monica, T.I. and Waka Flocka Flame. So fun!

Just wanted to share a few pictures below (although I apologize, these are not the best quality!)

Special guest- Waka Flocka Flame

Another special guest (Mr. R’s favorite)- T.I.

Miss Nicki Minaj!

Love me some Nicki! What a great show!

It’s Nicki Minaj Concert Day!!!

22 Jul

Can you tell I’m a tad bit excited? For my birthday, Mr. R absolutely suprised me by buying me tickets to this show! After I got out of the shower before work, I had put on my robe and felt something in my pocket. We were in the bathroom talking, and when I pulled it out to see what it was, I nearly fainted because he had slipped in these concert tickets! HOW AMAZING!!

So tonight, we are heading to The Fabulous Fox Theater, where we have seen shows like Beauty and the Beast and Robin Thicke, to see Miss Nicki Minaj live and in person!!!

So in honor of tonight, I present a slideshow of the wakiest, most fun, awesome, out-there rapper I know. I just love love love her and can’t wait for tonight!

Recipe: Banana Liquado

21 Jul

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Mr. R and I started our morning with this super easy, delicious banana milkshake. The recipe is courtesy of my dad; he’s been making this Mexican milkshake for us since before I can remember, which makes it so much better every time I make them!

The “recipe” is actually more of an ingredients list with “add to taste” instructions, but I’ll do my best to share as much as possible!

– 2 ripe bananas, cut into chunks

– 1 tray of ice cubes (about 16)

– 1.5 cups of milk

– 2 tbsps. brown sugar

– 1 tsp. cinnamon

– In a blender, mix ice cubes, bananas, brown sugar and milk

– Once liquified, add cinnamon on top for garnish

– Makes 2 milkshakes!

Colorado Dark Knight Tragedy

20 Jul

Hi everyone,

What a sad day. I had promised a recap after out Dark Knight Rises marathon yesterday, but instead of raving about how great the movie was or how much fun we had being in the theater for 9 hours, I am instead focusing on very sad, tragic news coming out of the premier.

As everyone knows by now, last night in Aurora, CO, a theater full of anxious, excited movie-goers just like myself and Mr. R, were terrorized, hurt, shot and killed. 12 dead and at least 59 injured. So shocking, so sad, so confusing. Why anyone would want to do this is beyond me, and I just wanted to take a second to express my sorrow, sadness and sympathies to everyone involved, affected or even just scared to go to the movies now. I know I am.

I will feel the slight twinge of nerves every time I go to a movie from now on. I will think about those people that lost their lives that night. I’ll remember that I, too, was in a theater at that same time, enjoying the movie they should have been. I won’t forget this senseless act, nor will I ever understand.

Let’s all be thankful for what we have and keep our thoughts with those who weren’t so lucky. It may sound cliche, but take a second to hug those you love. You never know when something so tragic could happen. I’m sure these innocent people never did.

To read more about the tragedy, here are a few links to stories below:

The Dark Knight Rises: A Batman Obsession

18 Jul

Hey yall!

So, as many of you may or may not know, Friday is opening day of The Dark Knight Rises. This day has been on our calendar for MONTHS, because Mr. R has a slight obsession with Batman and/or most superheros.

Don’t believe me? Check out the 30th birthday party we threw for Mr. R and his twin brother, Roly, this year (all creative genius for this party and pictures thanks to my sister-in-law, Jaclyn!)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So, to celebrate the premier of this movie, we found a killer deal at the movie theater. Thursday, we’re going to the movies at 6:30 p.m. for a Dark Knight Rises Marathon! For $25, we get to see Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and then The Dark Knight Rises. You heard me right. We’ll be at the theater for more than 8 hours!! Mr. R is so excited that we are even taking a half day at work to fully enjoy the day and get some rest before hand!

To celebrate, we are also going to (attempt) to make some Batman cookies, like the ones below.

We are going in PJs, and we are going to pig out on movie food all night! What a fun date night! I can’t wait.

Will post a recap Friday- once I finally wake up from Movie Hangover!
