Recipe: Fresh Strawberry Pie

25 Jul

Hi everyone!

Have to share this delicious and super easy recipe with you all (are you picking up on a theme here?) Mr. R originally found this recipe for fresh strawberry pie here in The Test Kitchen, and it was a hit when we debuted it at a family 4th of July party. Needless to say, this is going to be our go-to dish to bring anywhere!

Last weekend we went to a BBQ and brought two pies. Everyone loved them!

-2.5 lbs. fresh, whole strawberries

– 3/4 c sugar

– 2 tbs. cornstarch

– 1.5 tsp. pectin

– pinch slat

– pie sheet

– whipped cream

First, bake your crust and let cool. We used frozen, pre-made crusts, but if you’re feeling adventurous, here is a recipe for a pie crust from Simply Recipes.

Puree 6 large strawberries until smooth

In a bowl, mix sugar, cornstarch, pectin and salt. Mix it in with the strawberry puree.

Bring mixture to a boil and let boil for 2 minutes, stirring the whole time. After it cooks, transfer the gel-like mix to a bowl, add 1 tsp. lemon juice. Cool filling.

Add whole strawberries to puree and mix

Pile filling into pie crust

Let cool in fridge 2 hours. Then add whipped cream and enjoy. This recipe makes one pie… but you may need two 😉

Inspiration Board: Turquoise Love

24 Jul

Hi yall!

So last week I wrote about my favorite color, coral. Read that one here. This week, I put together another inspiration board, with all things turquoise. I love this color, too, and they happen to look fab together!

First- let’s talk about how awesome this Tiffany Blue Laundry Room via Cameras and Chaos is. I would do laundry EVERY day if it was in a room like this!

This teal dress with silver accessories via Polyvore is perfect for a rehearsal dinner, holiday party or wedding. So glamorous!

For the home: Loving this teal and burlap wall hanging, found on Etsy. Rustic, simple, lovely. You’ll see a little later how well this would fit in my house!

Eventually, I must have a high-low dress like this turquoise number- in love! via Pinterest.

Teal becomes the accent color in this dark outfit with a pop of color, via Polyvore.

And finally- a personal touch. Some turquoise touches in our own home!

Recipe: Banana Liquado

21 Jul

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Mr. R and I started our morning with this super easy, delicious banana milkshake. The recipe is courtesy of my dad; he’s been making this Mexican milkshake for us since before I can remember, which makes it so much better every time I make them!

The “recipe” is actually more of an ingredients list with “add to taste” instructions, but I’ll do my best to share as much as possible!

– 2 ripe bananas, cut into chunks

– 1 tray of ice cubes (about 16)

– 1.5 cups of milk

– 2 tbsps. brown sugar

– 1 tsp. cinnamon

– In a blender, mix ice cubes, bananas, brown sugar and milk

– Once liquified, add cinnamon on top for garnish

– Makes 2 milkshakes!

Colorado Dark Knight Tragedy

20 Jul

Hi everyone,

What a sad day. I had promised a recap after out Dark Knight Rises marathon yesterday, but instead of raving about how great the movie was or how much fun we had being in the theater for 9 hours, I am instead focusing on very sad, tragic news coming out of the premier.

As everyone knows by now, last night in Aurora, CO, a theater full of anxious, excited movie-goers just like myself and Mr. R, were terrorized, hurt, shot and killed. 12 dead and at least 59 injured. So shocking, so sad, so confusing. Why anyone would want to do this is beyond me, and I just wanted to take a second to express my sorrow, sadness and sympathies to everyone involved, affected or even just scared to go to the movies now. I know I am.

I will feel the slight twinge of nerves every time I go to a movie from now on. I will think about those people that lost their lives that night. I’ll remember that I, too, was in a theater at that same time, enjoying the movie they should have been. I won’t forget this senseless act, nor will I ever understand.

Let’s all be thankful for what we have and keep our thoughts with those who weren’t so lucky. It may sound cliche, but take a second to hug those you love. You never know when something so tragic could happen. I’m sure these innocent people never did.

Get Tall Quick!

15 Jul

Hey yall!

So, we’ve all heard about Get Rich Quick schemes. But how about Get Tall Quick schemes? I’m talking to you- all my shorties!

Well, I decided to put together a little (pun intended) cheat sheet for the vertically challenged among us. And you know what? Embrace it! How cute are tiny and petite girls? We aren’t the tall models of the world, but we can sure wear whatever heels we want! All women of all shapes and sizes are GORGEOUS, but unfortunately I only have experience on the short end of things, so here’s my two-cents.

1: Rock the high heels!  These shoes from Zara are perfect to elongate your legs, since the nude color will draw the eye from the bottom of the shoe up to your legs and almost connect them!

2. Platforms: On the topic of tall shoes, hidden platforms like the ones below from Pretty Small Shoes mask how much height they are adding but definitely do the trick. Try to avoid clunky platoforms that show off how much height you are adding and do it in a more subtle way.

3. There are two things I want to talk about with this Rachel Bilson look. She’s 5’2, so we’re the same height and weight (ha ha… did I fool you with that one?) So we are the same height, meaning that I should probably look to her for Get Tall Quick schemes!

Tip 3 is to elongate portions of your body. Think of it as color blocking for your clothes. Rachel rocks a long sleeve jacket with short shorts. That contrast creates the illusion that her arms and legs are longer than they actually are.

Tip 4  may not be a favorite of everyone, but if you got it, flaunt it! Rachel has great legs and doesn’t mind showing them off in short shorts, which plays into making them look longer than they are, and therefore makes her look taller.

5. Skinny jeans and heels. For the longest time, I avoided skinny jeans, thinking I was too curvy or not tall enough for them. Then I discovered that with heels, they really make your legs look long, no matter what shape or size you are!

6. Minimal, understated, thin jewelry will really help accentuate your outfits and your features without overpowering a short person and making you look rediculous. I think tall people can pull off chunky, huge statement pieces, and don’t get me wrong, so can the shorties! But thin jewelry like what you see below definitely adds an air of simplicity.

P.S. If you love the jewelry you see below, you can find it all on Etsy!

So, I want to hear from you! Do you have any Get Tall Quick ideas? I’m always looking for more!

DIY Project: Kitchen Chalkboard

14 Jul

Hey yall!

I am so excited to showcase our latest DIY project… a little kitchen decor. I love all the pins and ideas of big chalkboards being incorporated throughout houses, so we knew we needed one for our house! We found the perfect spot in the house for one… on a wall as you walk in to the kitchen. Here’s a picture of the wall in question. Bor-ing! Definitely needed the pick-up.

We also got a late wedding gift to Pottery Barn, so after that, this project only ended up costing $13! Woo hoo! Here’s the link to what we bought. It’s pretty cool. It’s actually part of a whole system, but we just wanted the chalkboard.

Here’s a nice little tool it came with to help us figure out where to put the screws. So helpful!

And Mr. R working hard…

Now, for the after pic. Much better, in my opinion! Installation was a breeze and took us all of 10 minutes to get it up. I am so excited to use our chalkboard for welcome messages when we have parties, dinner menus or reminders. It’s magnetic, too, and came with magnets, chalk and an eraser!

Recipe: Banana Smores!

12 Jul

Hi yall!

This post deserves to start with a YUM! Mr. R recently got a new grill, so I had been scouring Pinterest for great grilling recipes, when I stumbled up this gem… a recipe for banana smores via  QuickDish. Like I said- YUM!

This dessert was so quick and easy to make! I would highly recommend it. It should take about 10 minutes of prep time, and only about 2-3 minutes on the grill. Here’s everything you need:

– Bananas

– Small marshmallows

– Chocolate chips

– Biscoff Crackers (crumbled), or, the original recipe says you can use Cinnamon Toast Crunch, too!

– Vanilla Ice Cream

Once I had everything out, I made sure I had my recipe up (which I didn’t even need!)

First, prep everthing you are going to need. Crumble the cookies, have the chocolate chips and marshmallows on standby, and cut a slit down the length of the banana. Oh, and you should have your grill pre-heated too, to medium heat.

Once you are prepped, stuff the bananas with chocolate chips and marshmallows. Try not to let them break all the way down, or you’ll end up with a sandwich like I did! If that does indeed happen, you can use toothpicks to hold it together.

Once they are stuffed, roll them up and stick them on the grill for 2-3 minutes.

Here’s what they “should” turn out like. I didn’t get a good after picture (because we just wanted to eat!!), but I promise I will try it again soon and post one then!  Once they are done “grilling” simply unwrap and top with a scoop of ice cream. Then, enjoy!
